What is “Fun NTPU Kids Take to the Streets (瘋北大兒童上街趣)”?

Ever since discovering this event, I mark my calendar every late September to make sure we don’t miss it. On Saturday, October 3, 2026, we headed back to the Taipei University Special Zone (straddling Sanxia and Shulin Districts in New Taipei) for the 2026 7th Annual “Fun NTPU Kids Take to the Streets.(瘋北大兒童上街趣)”

  • Official FB Page: Check the event official FB page for organiser information and current announcements. We suggest adding a calendar reminder to check it in late September each year.
  • Event Hours: 2026 Oct 03, 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM.
  • Location: Dayi Road (the stretch between Xueqin Rd. and Xuefu Rd.). The entire section is completely closed to vehicle traffic and turned into an open-air street play venue.

Organized by the Taiwan Fun NTPU Cultural & Educational Development Association, the core mission of the event is to “Give the streets back to the kids.”

The organizers set up a wide variety of interactive zones, including two full-sized city buses dedicated entirely to kid graffiti, washable sidewalk chalk areas, extreme sports zones, firefighter water hose stations, outdoor survival zones, and story corners. The bus painting uses specially designated washable kids’ paint, giving parents total peace of mind.

Who is this event for?

This event is a perfect match for:

  • Families who want their kids to stay active, explore, and try new things (ideal for ages ranging from older preschoolers to mid-elementary students).
  • Kids who love painting, hands-on crafting, fire trucks, and outdoor adventure activities.

What we did on event day

The moment we arrived, the street was packed with lively activity booths—the atmosphere was electric! As soon as we reached the entrance, my child’s eyes lit up, jumping up and down with excitement knowing how much fun was waiting inside.

There were so many activities that one afternoon was barely enough time to cover everything. They even had tree-climbing and ice-bath walking challenges that we saw but simply ran out of time to try. We’re definitely coming back next year!

Wood Chopping

In the outdoor survival zone, there was a log-splitting station featuring large logs for adults and smaller wood blocks for kids.

Our kid has quite a bit of strength and split through small logs in just two or three swings! After finishing with style, he was bursting with pride, boasting, “That wasn’t hard at all!”

Staff members supervised closely at all times, and every child wore heavy cotton gloves to protect their hands, making it super safe.

Skateboard Coaching

The skate zone offered hands-on coaching. The instructor—who had an awesome afro—started by giving friendly high-fives and introducing himself. Once he built trust with the kids, my child felt totally comfortable letting the coach guide him on the board.

The instructor broke down every movement clearly, explaining how to bend knees slightly during turns, how to step on and off the board, and how to shift weight properly. You could tell the lesson plan was thoughtfully designed.

(Our kid was still a bit nervous though, so he ended up rolling around in a permanent half-squat—lol!).

Bus Painting

Painting a real city bus was by far the most popular station of the day!

To participate, you need to purchase washable paint on-site or bring your own. The line to buy paint at the venue was huge—easily a 1-hour wait or more. Not wanting to waste precious time standing in line, we decided against waiting.

Since our kid was dying to paint the bus, we came up with a clever shortcut: we approached families who looked like they were finished, had already washed their hands, and still had leftover paint, asking if we could buy their remaining paint off them.

Luckily, a kind family agreed! Once on board, our kid went to town covering the bus in vibrant art and didn’t want to leave.

Bus Washing

Toward the end of the event came the bus wash finale! Kids scrambled to get close, jumping and dancing as water sprayed everywhere. Everyone got pretty soaked, and the crowd went wild—it was such a blast!

Firefighter Experience

Our first stop at the firefighter booth was dressing up in mini turnout gear for a photo op. Then came the main event: operating a real fire hose connected to a water truck!

Guided by New Taipei City firefighters, kids got to turn the valves and control the direction of the spray themselves, getting a real sense of how heavy a pressurized hose actually is.

The weather was gorgeous, and the mist spraying into the sunlight created several bright rainbows!

Earthquake Simulator Truck

The earthquake simulation truck was another major attraction with a long wait—we stood in line for nearly an hour. Four people enter at a time to sit on a hydraulic shaking platform while screens display realistic scenarios like living rooms, kitchens, elevators, and stairwells. It felt remarkably realistic.

The moment the shaking started, our kid instinctively ducked and covered his head—proof that school earthquake drills really pay off! (In Taiwan, earthquake safety education is mandatory starting all the way in kindergarten.)

Firefighters were on hand throughout the simulation to explain safety tips, making it a super worthwhile experience.

Food

We packed our own lunch for the day: fishball egg drop soup and tomato meat sauce pasta.

There were no food stalls inside the closed event zone; buying food meant walking 1–2 blocks outside the area. Having our own packed meal saved us a ton of hassle!

How to Get There & Transportation Options

Reaching the venue is very straightforward, with several convenient options:

  • By Car: Set your GPS navigation directly to the streets surrounding the Taipei University Special Zone. Google Map Location
  • By Public Transit:
    • Option A: Take the TRA train to Yingge Station, then rent a WeMo or GoShare electric scooter to ride over.
    • Option B: Take the TRA train to Yingge Station, then transfer to a local bus or the Sanying MRT Line.

For our trip, dad drove us there at noon.

On the way back, our kid insisted on taking a train, so we rented a WeMo scooter near the university district, rode over to Yingge Station, and caught a train back to Taipei City. It was super convenient!
